Bakelite Composites

Also known as Formica, Tuffnol, and Novasteen, bakelite composites are insulating laminates, most commonly used for switchboards and electrical applications. There are three main types of bakelite composite, some of which are available in varying grades from Pacific West Corporation:

Paper Bakelite Composite:

Laminated material made from layers of compressed paper sheets bonded with a thermosetting synthetic resin. There are 4 grades of paper bakelite, based on their electrical properties.
• P1: Features excellent mechanical and sufficient electrical properties
• P1 – Cold Punching Grade: Features excellent mechanical and sufficient mechanical properties, and can be cold punched (20-25°C)
P1 & P2 paper bakelite is suitable for no-humid and low-tension applications, including control panels, general insulation panels, transformer and choke bobbins, condenser mountings, and tubelight ends and chokes.
• P2: Features good mechanical and electrical properties. Particularly suitable for power electrical industry for use in oil. Common applications include distribution boards, fuse holder base, transformer covers, and C.B. handles and side frames.
• P3: Features sufficient mechanical and good electrical properties, presenting low water absorption. Suitable for higher voltage and high-tension applications, even under tropical conditions, such as grid covers, relay spacers, selector bank insulation, transformer and choke bobbins for power – electronics, and HV transformer tap chargers.

Fabric Bakelite Composite:

Laminated material made from layers of compressed woven cotton fabric bonded with a thermosetting synthetic resin. There are 2 grades of paper bakelite, based on the coarseness of cloth.
F1: Fine weave grade featuring excellent machinability and mechanical strength, and a very good strength-to-weight ratio. Suitable applications include shuttles, pulleys, structural parts, machine tool gibs/slideways, friction plates, gears, automobile couplings, spindle, and low-voltage contact breaker
F3: General purpose greade featuring good machinability and mechanical strength, and high impact resistance. Suitable applications include heavy duty gears, piling dolly, rolling mill bearings, pulleys, and workbench tops.

Switchpanel: A paper based phenolic laminate insulating panel suitable for use as a domestic and industrial metering panels, switchboard insulating panels and supports.
