Polyethylene Products

Polyethylene is available in several grades.  All the grades have similar properties and perform along similar lines, but as the grades of these plastic products increase, so does the quality, performance and of course the price, as is the case with most plastic products and their grades. When the molecular weight increases in the polyethylene family, their characteristics also increase and enhanced performance is achieved.  All the polyethylenes are lightweight and have good chemical resistance and do not absorb water.   Polyethylenes are used where componentry is required  to be in direct contact with food stuffs and also is made into parts subject to high impact stresses.  Some of the different grades of polyethylene are listed below with a few of their specific applications and benefits.

HDPE Product Description

Polyethylene 300 (HDPE – High Density Polyethylene) is a rigid material which is available in large sheets for general use in plant engineering, tank construction and the wastewater industry, where all round chemical resistance and weather ability are required.  This is a good food grade general purpose polyethylene, making it a great choice for use in commercial kitchens.

Key Features and Benefits of Polyethylene 300:

  • Excellent abrasion resistance
  • Very low co-efficient of friction
  • Very high surface release properties
  • High chemical resistance
  • Excellent impact resistance
  • Very good damping properties
  • Good wear resistant material
  • Cheaper than nylon
  • Weldable (suitable for fabrication)
  • Light weight (easy to handle without special equipment)
  • Physiologically inert (approved for food applications)
  • Electrical insulation
  • Weatherproof
  • Chemical resistance - resists corrosive chemicals (e.g. Sulphuric Acid, Caustic Soda)
  • Withstands temperatures of –50 to +80 degrees centigrade

 Applications of Polyethylene 300:

  • Componentry in direct contact with foodstuffs
  • Cutting and chopping boards
  • Commercial cutting boards in abbatoirs, meat works and fish markets
  • Spacers between steel plates
  • Washers
  • Butchers preparation tables
  • Poultry processing plants

UHMWPE Product Description

Polyethylene 7000 (UHMWPE – Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is formulated for optimum sliding characteristics and resistance to wear and abrasion.  This polyethylene is virtually unbreakable and reduces friction, wear, clogging and noise when compared with metal.  This plastic product never needs lubrication.  Problems with cohesive, wet or sticky materials can be overcome with the use of UHMWPE in industrial situations ranging from fine foods to the mining industry.  Polyethylene 7000 is rated better than carbon steel for sliding abrasion applications and is another of our plastic products which comes under the umbrella of engineering plastics.

Key Features and Benefits of Polyethylene 7000:

·         Impact strength

·         Very high dielectric strength

·         Chemical resistand (will not corrode)

·         Abrasion resistant

·         Low coefficient of friction

·    No lubrication required

·         Electrical insulation

·        Weatherproof

·         Light weight

·         Approved for the food and beverage industries

Applications for Polyethylene 7000:

  • Mechanical transmission support products
  • Mechanical bearing parts
  • Food machine equipment
  • Flow promotion
