Perspex Sheets

Perspex sheets (acrylic) are probably the most commonly used plastic product on the market today. Perspex sheets were developed during World War 1 for use in war planes and their uses have grown steadily since and are now a part of everyday life worldwide. For example, due to its high degree of transparency, clear perspex sheets are used in the fabrication of display cabinets, barcode scanning machines at the supermarket, bank counters, poster/photograph frames, general signage, raffle barrels, etc.  Acrylic transmits 92% of all visible light.

One of the reasons for the high use of acrylic is its favourable comparison to glass. Perspex sheets weigh less than half that of glass sheets of the same dimensions and can also withstand an impact 17 times greater than that of glass, thus making it a great alternative. Also, as it is made from synthetic materials, by using acrylic we can help reduce the destruction of natural resources and help maintain the earth’s ecological balance.  Acrylic is 100% recyclable and is safe to use in the food industry.  The outdoor weathering of acrylic is extremely good - it is UV stable, which makes it a great choice for pool fencing, balcony guard panels and roof terrace partitions.

Another reason for the high use of acrylic is its versatility and ease of use. Perspex is a non-conductor of heat and electric current, and is resistant to most chemicals, oils, and alkalines. It is a plastic product that can be sawn, drilled, engraved, flame polished, bent (with heat of between 160 and 180 degrees Centigrade), bonded, filled, routered, glued (with an acrylic adhesive – available from Pacific West), grinded, welded, and screen painted on.  Please see our plastic fabrication page for more information on acrylic fabrication.

As perspex sheets are available in 58 colours and many thicknesses, its uses are unlimited. Perspex sheet is also available in a prismatic profile (this plastic product is used for skylights and neon light covers), non-glare and also silver and gold.

Acrylic is a high gloss product, making it the ideal plastic product for display cases and point of sale displays.  Due to its excellent transparency, acrylic is the ideal plastic for windows and windscreens on boats, caravans, tractors, forklifts and truck visors.  Along with its UV stability, acrylic has high resistance to marine environments, ensuring that your boat glazing and bait boards will last.

It is also a great choice in the automotive fields due to its good chemical resistance to motor oils and fuels.  Some of the uses in this area are number plate covers, motorcycle windshields, wind deflectors and rear window savers.  Acrylic is shatter resistant.

In the domestic situation, acrylic can be used for kitchen splash backs, drawer inserts, light covers, shelving and displaying your memorabilia, pool fencing and reptile enclosures for example.

In a commercial setting, acrylic (perspex) can be used for people barriers, kick plates, decorative protections in hospitals, medical centres, restaurants, pubs etc., electrical switch board covers, stairwell panels and general framing of photographs, posters menus and awards.

Suitable Plastic Adhesive

The best plastic adhesives to use with acrylic are the Acri Bond 5 for quick solvent welding , the Acri Bond 10 for stronger joints or the Acri Bond 25 for acrylic lamination of larger areas, from our own range of Australian made adhesives.  Please see the Acri Bond adhesives page for more information on these glues.
